Martial Arts: Choosing Karate, Taekwondo Or Jiu Jitsu In Encinitas
There are plenty of martial arts schools in San Diego County and for those who are searching for a school for their child, it can seem daunting to choose from Karate in Carlsbad, Jiu Jitsu in Encinitas or perhaps taekwondo or judo. The good news is that while each features different training techniques, the ultimate goal at each school should be to transform each child or teen into a confident, well-disciplined student.
It’s true that many people believe that martial arts is all about fighting, but at Team MAI, as well as many other schools for karate or perhaps jiu jitsu in Encinitas and Carlsbad, our focus is on self-defense and building self-confidence. A well-trained student of martial arts learns to possess self-control, to be respectful of others and to be responsible in all aspects of daily life.
When parents are searching for a martial arts school, it’s best to consider the instructors’ philosophy above all other considerations. It doesn’t really matter if you opt for taekwondo, karate, judo or jiu-jitsu in Encinitas. What matters most is how comfortable your child feels while at the facility and how the children are being taught. This is why it is wise to visit several schools and then select the one that is the best fit for your child.
Still, many parents don’t really understand the differences among the many disciplines of martial arts. Karate, for instance, was developed in Okinawa, Japan, and is a martial art that focuses on striking and kicking, although some grappling, throws and joint locks also may be included in the training.
Jiu-jitsu, especially Brazilian jiu-jitsu, focuses more on grappling and ground fighting. Jiu-jitsu developed in Japan and was introduced in Brazil during the early 20th century and then modified into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. When you sign up for class in jiu-jitsu in Encinitas or Carlsbad, typically it will be Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Countries all over the world have developed their own fighting styles and marital arts. In Korea, taekwondo is the predominant martial art. Taekwondo tends to focus on kicking, although striking and take-downs also are taught. Of course, there are also schools that focus on Chinese martial arts, such as kung fu or wing chun. Any of these disciplines will provide your child or teen will excellent self-defense skills.
Our focus at Team MAI is on karate, and while each instructor or Sensei has a black belt in karate, several also have earned black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other types of martial arts. Our goal is to present a well-rounded curriculum that challenges and motivates students to keep improving their skills.
If you wish to introduce your child to the world of karate, we have several options to consider. We offer a free two-week trial at our dojo so that children or teens can experience a class or two and see if karate is a good fit. We also offer after-school programs at nine local elementary schools as well as Carlsbad Country Day School. This can be a great way to get started and from there, you can move on to more intensive training at the dojo.
