Karate & Jiu Jitsu In Carlsbad: The Tournament Team
Whether you opt for karate, taekwondo or perhaps jiu jitsu in Carlsbad, as your child progresses in their training, you may have the option to join a tournament team. Here are a few helpful facts about our Tournament Team and what it’s all about.
Why Join A Tournament Team?
For some students of karate or jiu jitsu in Carlsbad, joining a tournament team is a natural progression of their training. While a student isn’t required to join a team at any point in their training, there are many excellent reasons to consider this option. During team training, students will forge close friendships with other students, further develop their karate skills and learn some important life skills, as well. For instance, through competition, a student learns how to win graciously or how to accept a loss graciously. Tournament team training also improves self-control and self-discipline, as well as building self-confidence.
Students learn to work toward a goal, and the tournaments provide them with a way to truly test their skills. They will be able to see first-hand where they are succeeding and what areas of training might need improvement. Best of all, these tournaments are a blast. The kids have a fantastic time, both while competing and while watching their fellow students compete. This can be an ideal team experience for a child or teen that would benefit from a team experience, yet doesn’t have an interest in traditional “team sports” such as basketball, baseball/softball, football, etc.
For our traditional karate program, students typically attend one class per week, but the tournament team requires a higher level of commitment. Students must try out for the team and, if accepted, this is a two-year commitment with additional practices beyond the weekly lesson. In addition, tournament team members will attend three required tournaments each year.
Once a student has been on the tournament team for two years, they will have the opportunity to try out for our World Team. This is an elite team where students learn advanced sparring techniques as well as showmanship and weapons training. This team also includes participation in a Las Vegas tournament, which is an experience your child or teen will remember all their life.
Attending the tournaments is an amazing experience, and our tournament team members go to three Southern California tournaments throughout the course of the year. All of these tournaments are 4 and 5-star rated IMAC and NASKA competitions. IMAC stands for the International Martial Arts Council and NASKA stands for the North American Sport Karate Association. These are two of the nation’s top karate organizations, and they host a variety of competitions throughout the year.
